Auto manufacturers haven't really paid too much attention to under-body drag because you can't see it, but it is significant. When people started designing electric cars, and were trying to squeeze every last ounce of efficiency out of the car, they realized how much they could reduce drag by smoothing out the bottom. Even so much as a few strategically placed plastic panels can significantly smooth the flow of air under the car at 80 mph. With gasoline powered cars, they didn't care much about reducing drag, they just added horsepower to compensate. They still do that today, just look at the EVO!
